What to Look for When Searching for Senior Housing

Finding elderly care for a loved one can be a difficult task. You may not want to search for senior housing, but the need is there and you have to. If you know what to look for to ensure that you find a great place for your loved one's next home, this makes the process easier. You will want to take the time to visit any home that you are considering so that you can determine the best one for your loved one.

Clean and cheerful

No one wants to live in a place that is drab or dirty. Check out the facility to make sure that an effort is made to keep it looking cheerful, bright and happy. It should be clean and there should be no unpleasant odors.

Staff

Speak to the staff. Are they pleasant and responsive? Do they seem short and rushed? Pay attention to how they interact with residents. Are they kind? Are they patient? If you find that the staff are rude or ignore residents and their attempts at conversation, you may want to look elsewhere. The staff can make a place wonderful or miserable.

Safety

  • Look for tripping hazards. Hazards include cords in pathways, flooring or trim lifting up, rugs that are not secured, etc.

  • Are doors monitored in order to keep residents from wandering off?

  • Are there enough staff members to care for the residents?

Activities

Check out the activities that are available. The more activities the better. Are there rooms set up for puzzles or crafts? These can be a lot of fun and a great way for residents to meet one another and interact. Does the activities director arrange for some off-site outings that residents can take part in? These are all important for the happiness of the residents.

With a bit of effort and some research, you can find housing that will make your loved one feel safe, secure and happy. A cheerful, pleasant, safe environment is key to making someone feel welcome. Activities are a must. They help residents adjust more quickly and give them something to look forward to. Lastly, trust your instincts. You will know when you've found the right place. When you see how happy and well-adjusted your loved one is after a short time, you'll be able to feel good that you made the right choice.
